What are the types of data center cooling techniques?

 Maintaining your equipment temperature is necessary for an efficient working data centre. However, excess warmth and humidity can lead to increase the financial burden upon your business; there are many techniques through which you can cool down your data centers for better functioning:

  • Free cooling: Free cooling is a cost-effective way to cool down your data centre; it uses minimal cooling to maintain the temperature of the IT equipment. It works in two ways: air-side economisation and water-side economisation. Air-side economisation uses air from outside to cool down the equipment. In contrast, water-side economisation uses the evaporative cooling capacity of a cooling tower to produce chilled water to cool down the equipment. However, this technique has its drawbacks as it attracts dirt particles too with the air.
  • Chilled water system: Liquid cooling is another option for maintaining the equipment temperature and is much more efficient because chilled water passes through the system while contacting different equipment to cool down them separately. The water travels through the coils and engulfs the heat, and get deposited in the chiller.
  • Pumped refrigerant: This method pumps water through a heat exchanger and utilises a cold pumped refrigerant to take out the heat. This method is energy efficient as it can transmit power from the servers.
  • Indirect air evaporative system: In this technique, an air duct is connected to an indirective evaporative cooler. The method is efficient as it uses the air from outside to cool down the equipment if the outdoor temperature is more relaxed.
  • Data centre organisation: Placement of your data centre equipment is an essential aspect of maintaining your data centre temperature. Efficient organisation of your data centres ensure a proper airflow which helps in maintaining the temperature.   • Hot/cold aisle arrangement: The data centre often experiences mixing of air, hot and cold aisle prevent the air to get mixed up. The method is implemented by placing the racks to separate the hot and cold air for efficient working of the equipment.
