Choosing the Right Automatic Transfer Switch



When the power goes out, the load is then transferred upon an automatic Transfer Switch; it is cardinal to choose switches that are of suitable quality and can withstand the power fluctuations. Some technical factors also determine the choice of the Automatic Transfer Switch, like the type of load it can handle, size, voltage, compatibility and price. There are different ways in which an automatic transfer switch operates:

Open-transition: these switches operate when separated from the primary source and then connected to the backup. There is a difference of a fraction of seconds between the transfers.

Fast-closed transition: In these types of switches, there is no disconnection of the primary source. Both the sources work parallel, and the primary source is disconnected when the connection is established between the backup source.

Soft-closed transition: in this type of transition, the devices work in a synchronised manner wherein they establish a connection using ramp load impulse.

Sub-cycle transfer: this type is usually used with a UPS as there is a slight difference in establishing a connection.

Selecting the mode of transition depends upon the load you are making the switch for. If you buy the switch for a hospital, you cannot afford power loss for even a second. Their fast-closed transition loads are preferred.

Current Rating:

The switch you are selecting should be able to transfer the electricity for three or more hours. And there must be a constant flow of current. The current rating usually ranges from 30 to 400 amps.

Load type: there is also various types of loads that can be considered while choosing an automatic transfer switch.

  • Restrictive load motor
  • Total system loads
  • Electric discharge load

The automatic system switch is available in three styles to choose from:

  • Load centers: this style comprises ATS and sub-panel in a single circuit.
  • Standard switches: this method is not preferred nowadays as it is not technologically advanced.
  • Service disconnect: these are selected where the load is more, and the power requirement is more than average.
